About UNDP in Sierra Leone

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the UN's global development agency. UNDP works with the government of Sierra Leone to eradicate proverty, and to reduce inequality and exclusion. 

Since 1965, UNDP has been working in partnership with the Government and people in Sierra Leone (SL). Guided by the national Agenda for Prosperity (2013-2018), UNDP Sierra Leone supports Government in two particular areas: inclusive growth and sustainability; and effective and inclusive democratic governance. 

 

What do we want to accomplish?

UNDP policy is guided by the Sustainbale Development Goals (SDGs), a universal call to action, addressing the root causes of poverty while affecting positive changes for both people and planet. The SDGs provide a set of goals and targets for countries to adopt, in accordance with thier own priorities, stages of development, and the environmental challenges of the world at large.

Inclusive Growth and Sustainability 

UNDP SL works with the people of Sierra Leone to reduce poverty and marginalization - with particular regard to the most vulnerable and excluded - in ways that economically, socially and environmentally sustainable. 

Effective and Inclusive Democratic Governance

UNDP’s supports the people of Sierra Leone in creating an enabling environment for stability, rule of law and good governance. This includes stenghtened service delivery, legal and judicial systems, and democratic institutions and processess. 

Who are the decision makers?

The UN Resident Coordinator heads the UN Country Team in Sierra Leone and is also the Resident Representative of UNDP Sierra Leone.

UNDP Sierra Leone is managed by a Country Director who is responsible for ensuring the effective day-to-day management of UNDP Country Office and assumes overall responsibility for the UNDP programme and operations to ensure coherence and strategic direction of UNDP activities. The Country Director is supported by the Deputy Country Director for Operations and three cluster heads, one for each programme cluster - Inclusive Growth, Energy and Environment and Democratic Governance.

UNDP works in close collaboration with the Government of Sierra Leone through the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development and other key Ministries, Departments and Agencies. The implementation of UNDP programme activities are carried out by Implementing Partners as appropriate, including national and local Government partners and civil society actors.
