Aid delivery to typhoon affected communities gathers pace; but much more is needed to respond to crisis
The United Nations Humanitarian Chief, Valerie Amos, visited today Tacloban City and Guiuan, on the far eastern coast of Samar province, to assess progress on getting aid to communities left devastated in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan.

As the international community continues to transport and distribute aid to the victims of typhoon Haiyan under extremely challenging circumstances, UNDP has pledged US$ 5 million to help clear the removal of some of the millions of tonnes of debris left over from the storm.

An estimated 3 million people in the path of Typhoon Haiyan (locally known as Yolanda) are now displaced across the typhoon affected regions, according to the Disaster Response Operations Monitoring and Information Centre. They also report 244,000 homes are totally destroyed.

Philippines - United Nations team arrive in Tacloban City and report scenes of absolute devastation in path of Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda)
A United Nations Disaster Assessment Coordination Team (UNDAC) arrived this morning to Tacloban and found scenes of total devastation in the city where Typhoon Haiyan (locally known as Yolanda) first struck. The roads are impassable from the airport to the town and the only means of travelling is by helicopter.

Secretary-General concerned about security of United Nations personnel, humanitarian workers in increasingly challenging environments
“United Nations personnel serve in an increasingly dangerous environment and encounter a variety of threats not previously encountered in the history of the Organization,” United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says in a report to the General Assembly released today. Citing the safety and security of United Nations personnel as his highest priority, the Secretary-General also appeals to Member States and host Governments to support all measures of safety and security to improve the operational environment for United Nations personnel and humanitarian workers.

Philippines - UN and partners seek US $46.8 million to respond to acute needs after Bohol earthquake
The United Nations and humanitarian partners in the Philippines are launching an action plan that seeks US$46.8 million, to meet the acute needs of the victims of the Bohol Earthquake. The plan supports Government priorities including emergency shelter for 344,000 displaced and homeless people, water, sanitation and hygiene, debris removal and coordination, as well as other life-saving interventions.
