The Regional Human Rights Commission in the Autonomous Region in Mindanao (RHRC-ARMM) yesterday held a Human Rights Summit at the Garden Orchids Hotel. At the Summit, the RHRC introduced a new peace and human rights project, supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the European Union (EU), to key stakeholders from ARMM, particularly Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi (BASULTA).

The XI Match Against Poverty held last March in Bern, Switzerland raised US$190,000 for ongoing recovery efforts in the Philippines where more than 5,000 people lost their lives last November to Typhoon Haiyan.

Deutsche Post DHL and UNDP launch second “Get Airports Ready for Disaster” workshop in the Philippines
Deutsche Post DHL and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) today launched a “Get Airports Ready for Disaster” (GARD) workshop at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport. Running from March 31 to April 2, 2014, the workshop prepares airport personnel for the logistics of emergencies, including handling high volumes of incoming goods and passengers in the aftermath of a disaster. The 52 participants are a mix of staff from airport operations, air traffic control, security and relevant disaster management agencies that play a vital role in the aftermath of a natural disaster.

The Government of Australia and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) signed yesterday two new partnership agreements, reaffirming their commitment to help promote resilience and recovery in the Philippines. The first agreement reaffirms their joint commitment to continue assistance to the Philippines in reducing people’s risk to disasters across the country, while the second agreement commits to working together to provide technical expertise to support typhoon-recovery efforts across the Visayas.

In a simple signing ceremony UNDP and UNICEF have officially confirmed their agreement for the implementation of US$ 3.5 million for waste management in Typhoon Yolanda affected areas. The project will be implemented by UNDP with funding provided by UNICEF.

The Government of Japan and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) forged an agreement today for additional support to Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) recovery and resilience in the Visayas. As the humanitarian response transitions from relief to recovery, the Japanese Government committed an additional USD 3.5 million (approx. Php 157 million) to support livelihood restoration and to strengthen local government systems and services.

The race is on to salvage valuable wood from millions of typhoon felled coconut trees in the central Philippines. Experts believe that salvaged coco lumber could be used for urgently needed temporary shelters, as the Yolanda (Haiyan) super storm left four million people displaced, just over two months ago in the Visayas region. It also killed thousands and devastated livelihoods across nine of the Philippines’ poorest provinces. If stored correctly, the lumber could also prove a potent way of securing thousands of livelihoods. But, time is running out as the trees need to be recovered before May 2014, according to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

UN opens global call for nominations to identify local sustainable development solutions that can change the world
A United Nations-led partnership that “shines a spotlight” on local sustainable development innovations today launched its global call for nominations for the Equator Prize 2014. Today marks the first step in a worldwide search to identify leading community-based initiatives from across the developing world that advance environmental conservation while fighting poverty. Nominations are open from 146 countries through March 22, 2014.

UNDP launched today a new video explaining how recovery is coordinated in the devastated areas across the Visayas. “Essentially, we have two disasters: one in the east and one in the west. In the west, the damage has been severe but the recovery of the communities themselves have been quick – sometimes self-organized, sometimes self-motivated, sometimes supported by the government, military and international agencies,” says UNDP Senior Recovery Coordinator Yuri Afanasiev in the video filmed in Tacloban.

The roll-out of the mobile cash transfer system is underway in typhoon-ravaged Tacloban. This money transfer system will be used for those who are employed in emergency clean-up schemes in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda).
