The topography of disaster risk reduction: UNDP maps out hazard awareness in typhoon-affected communities
The conversation has begun in some of Typhoon Haiyan’s hardest hit communities thanks to a mapping project implemented by Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) that began this week in Tacloban, Philippines.

In partnership with UNDP, Gov’t agencies and LGUs come together to discuss how to fast-track implementation of recovery plans in nine hard-hit municipalities of Eastern Samar
United Nations Development Programme and the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) launched today ‘Harmonizing Agencies’ Initiatives for Post-Yolanda Actions’ (HAIYAN), a project aimed at the fast track implementation of recovery plans in nine of the hardest hit municipalities in Eastern Samar. Part of UNDP’s support to Yolanda recovery efforts, the project aims to synchronize recovery efforts of various line agencies and local government units by mapping out priority areas for funding.

Six months after Typhoon Haiyan (known locally as Yolanda) struck the Central Philippines on 8 November, the humanitarian situation has stabilized across the affected regions. The progress remains fragile, however, as millions of survivors require ongoing assistance. The most pressing needs are related to shelter and restoring people’s livelihoods.

Five months after the strongest typhoon hit the Philippines, Trinidad Bato-balono proudly pointed to the coast she helped clean with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). She says businesses are slowly picking up; tourists are starting to return, and students are going back to school. Getting the port up and running was crucial in recovering the tourism industry. Despite the devastation of one ramp, ferry services have resumed regular operations, providing locals and foreigners access to hundreds of trips weekly from Hagnaya Warf in San Remigio to Sante Fe.

The XI Match Against Poverty held last March in Bern, Switzerland raised US$190,000 for ongoing recovery efforts in the Philippines where more than 5,000 people lost their lives last November to Typhoon Haiyan.

Deutsche Post DHL and UNDP launch second “Get Airports Ready for Disaster” workshop in the Philippines
Deutsche Post DHL and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) today launched a “Get Airports Ready for Disaster” (GARD) workshop at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport. Running from March 31 to April 2, 2014, the workshop prepares airport personnel for the logistics of emergencies, including handling high volumes of incoming goods and passengers in the aftermath of a disaster. The 52 participants are a mix of staff from airport operations, air traffic control, security and relevant disaster management agencies that play a vital role in the aftermath of a natural disaster.

The Government of Australia and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) signed yesterday two new partnership agreements, reaffirming their commitment to help promote resilience and recovery in the Philippines. The first agreement reaffirms their joint commitment to continue assistance to the Philippines in reducing people’s risk to disasters across the country, while the second agreement commits to working together to provide technical expertise to support typhoon-recovery efforts across the Visayas.

In a simple signing ceremony UNDP and UNICEF have officially confirmed their agreement for the implementation of US$ 3.5 million for waste management in Typhoon Yolanda affected areas. The project will be implemented by UNDP with funding provided by UNICEF.

In its fourth year, N-Peace is excited to announce two new countries – Pakistan and Myanmar – and four new categories in the 2014 N-Peace Awards. Early recovery appears to be in full swing in Typhoon Haiyan-affected areas after almost four months of intensive humanitarian aid but according to UN officials, the progress must be maintained to prevent further harm to the most vulnerable.
